TYC NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM - March 6-8 2009 (Edmonton)

Faith and Culture: Gender, Sexuality and Family Life - The Challenge of Living a Holy Life in Today’s World"

Today in North America traditional Christian morality is under violent assault.

The faithful of the Orthodox Churches in Canada live in a society that lives and promotes an anti-Orthodox Christian – secular humanist message – worldview . In order to deal effectively with this challenge we need to understand how the secular world view differs from a patristic Orthodox Christian world view and why. Much too often, many of our members are permeated with a non-Orthodox Christian world view without even realizing it. In the absence of a solid grounding in the teachings of the Orthodox Faith a large percentage of our faithful lead nominal–superficial Christian lives. In particular, this is so when it comes to our understanding of issues relating to gender, sexuality and family life

The purpose of this Symposium is to deepen our understanding of the differences between these world views. To do this, as a first step, we need to explore in some depth the Orthodox Christian view on what is a holy life and then go on to systematically explore the points of conflict.

ALBERTA-UKRAINE GENEALOGICAL PROJECT UPDATE

Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project – visit from genealogical research office in Lviv, Ukraine
Please read the article and photos highlighting the recent visit of our genealogical research partners in Ukraine: Prof. Stepan Pavljuk and Dr. Roman Chmelyk of the Institute of Ethnology, Lviv. This study and lecture tour provided an opportunity for our partners in Ukraine to become better acquainted with the scope of activities undertaken in Alberta by our genealogical research office and partners in the Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project.

Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project – Documenting Church Properties in Rural Communities in Alberta
Please read the article and photo highlighting the fieldwork undertaken at the Stry Holy Eurcharist cemetery for the Documenting Church Properties in Rural Communities in Alberta project. The efforts between members of Stry community and volunteers of the Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project at this kick-off event demonstrated a positive outlook for fieldwork at other cemeteries in Stry and in east central Alberta for this summer.

***** For students now completing their studies for the year and seeking employment, please note that we are still interested to fill up to two positions to act as community liaisons and, among other office tasks, assist in the documentation and recording of church properties and cemeteries in east central Alberta. We are looking to fill these positions immediately, with a start date of early July. Download the job opportunity.
